Checkout, stub issues: can't rename/find/save stub files

Post by lvldcook »

Having lots of problems with getting stubs to work.
Added file to remote server. Tried to check out. Remote server can't save stub files. What is the problem?

There may be multiple reasons why this file cannot be renamed. Depending on the server, the destination file name may be too long. Or your FTP server does not accept some chars in the destination name. Both can be tested by attempting to manually create such file using your favorite FTP client.

In the first case you could reorganize your directory structure to make the path shorter. In the second, use Project Options | Advanced | Escape Characters For Stub File Names to eliminate offending chars.

thanks for your reply. I looked more into this today and found the following:

1. I can rename the file manually via windows explorer.

2. I have escaped all the relevant characters so ftp is "accepting" those characters (namely "%", "#", and "@").

3. I can rename the file via using ftp from a command prompt window. When I do this, ftp returns "350 File exists, ready for destination name" (as also in the ftpvc trace - When I looked up a ftp 350 error code on the web, it specifies: "Requested file action pending further information.") Very shortly after that, in my command prompt window, ftp returns "250 RNTO command successful.". The ftpvc trace is not capturing that prompt. I'm thinking maybe ftpvc captures the 1st 350 error code to a message box and is not waiting long enough to catch the 250 command successful code, and therefore doesn't know the file was actually renamed successfully.
Here is a trace from my ftp command prompt window:

ftp> ls

I still believe it's the length of the destination path. In your manual test it was 187 byte, and in FtpVC it was 194 bytes (.ftpvc/ was in front of the name you used).

Anyway, you can shorten the stub name by changing your local directory path. Currently it appears to be C:\Documents and Settings\cook\My Documents\visual studio 2005\projects\dbresultslistener. You can either use a different local directory or map this directory to a shorter name using the 'subst' command.

I don't get to use a different local directory. It's set by Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and is a standard used by everyone in our group. I don't think I should have to reconfigure my Visual Studio installation to satisfy ftpvc.
I don't know anything about using subst - this seems like a poor workaround. Filenames should be able to be up to 255 characters since Win95. Why should it care if it is 194 bytes or 187 bytes?

Looked up subst and mapped virtual local drive to long path name.
Reset up FtpVC with new virtual drive.
Was able to check out files successfully, so strategy works OK.
Thanks for your idea.

Sorry to reactivate this thread but is it possible to increase the size of the paths. I am working with a system that has many nested folders and I am having this problem.

Unfortunately, the limit (max path of 260 characters) is imposed by Windows, so if you are hosting your FTP files on Windows, no paths longer than 260 characters can be created. The only workaround we came up with is mentioned in this thread: subst.

If I setup using a linux server to host the 'Remote Directory' would that that enable me to have longer paths?

Ok, here goes.

I have a remote path like this:

/home/john/sourcecode/clients/xxx/mainsite/administrator/components/com_virtuemart/html/templates/product_details

Based on the fact that I do not get any errors, I think it works on a Linux server.

Is there anyway to log the actual renames the program makes? This could prove the point.
Many Thanks

The real test is to have a deep tree on the client, or just use the same client location that didn't work with your Windows FTP server. The fact that FtpVC doesn't complain means by itself that the renames work. You should also be able to see something like

250 RNTO command successful.

in the output pane.

Hi,

With a local path of:

E:\www\Clients\xxxxxxxxx\MainSite\administrator\components\com_virtuemart\html\templates

and a remote path of:

/home/john/sourcecode/clients/xxx/mainsite/administrator/components/com_virtuemart/html/templates

I get '250 Rename successful' in the ouput pane.

I will probalby end up with some even deeper paths, so will let you know if I come accross anything.
Many Thanks

Re: Checkout, stub issues: can't rename/find/save stub files

Post by fredmc »

This is an old post, but I thought it better to continue it than start a new one with an identical title.

FtpVC is occassionally having problems uploading tmp files and renaming stub files. I have tested doing the rename in my FTP client (WS_FTP Pro) with no problems. I also tested doing the rename on the Linux server (via ssh). The problem does not seem to be consistent.

Here is the log of a check out and subsequent check in:

Checking on the server, I found that the file
.ftpvc/profile.cgi.stub.348978112.2.Frederick.U02-08-2014#216#157#112.G@3@1htm@1DSIDLO@C1@1site@1rep@1code@1BACKOF@C1.%%%locked%%%
did exist. As noted above I renamed it manually successfully, both in my FTP client and on the server.

In the log, above, you can see that some renames are successful.

I have verified that the ownership and permissions of the .ftpvc directory are ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
