Hi,
Is the new version 2.4 backwards compatible with 2.3 in that sense that some users can use v2.3 and some v2.4 in the same project?

Yes, 2.4 clients can co-exist with 2.3 clients since no changes to the stub format were made in 2.4. Of course, 2.3 clients will lack new features.
