Showing column number when begin editing

Post by AlexL »

Hello.

After EDP shows file comparison panels (having finished comparing algorithm), I sometimes want to click on the end of some line in order to see how many characters it contains. EDP shows this information (current editing column) in its status bar. But unfortunately it shows this info only when I click second time on the same place in a text line. When I click first time, EDP indeed enters editing mode (as required), but does not show current column.

Thank you.

Are you sure about this? I can't reproduce this problem. Perhaps you could provide more detailed steps. Also, sending your options exported to a file might help (you can do it via the forum).

Yes. Let's suppose we want to compare "C:\Program Files\ExamDiff Pro\Whatsnew.txt" with itself. Immediately after comparing we get this image:
http://www.geocities.com/alexl1118/edp0 ... paring.jpg
which is normal. When we click once on the text (it's not important, where we click), we get this image (see the cursor in the blue circle, and the blank space in the red circle):
http://www.geocities.com/alexl1118/edp0 ... text_m.jpg
And only after we click it second time, we get what we want (same cursor, but the red circle now contains the needed information):
http://www.geocities.com/alexl1118/edp0 ... text_m.jpg

Options are here:
http://www.geocities.com/alexl1118/edp01_options.txt
Sorry, how did you mean to give them via the forum?

Thank you.

Hmm... I still can't reproduce this. Still, try the fix that will appear in the next build of 3.4. You can preview it at

This is fine. I meant, you could send them via PM or EMAIL buttons in the forum.

Same thing (v3.4.1.5).

It seems though that when I click first time, some characters flash in that status line, but something other erases them. But I'm not sure.

I tried now our other user with v3.3.2.5 and totally different computer (laptop, while I have desktop). There is the same thing there.

Thank you.

Still can't reproduce this. Please try the latest build from the same location, http://www.prestosoft.com/download/ed34preview.zip . Some changes made there may help the problem.

Same thing.
But now I succeeded to see what text flashes in the status bar (I mentioned this flashing in my previous message). This text is the needed info (line/col). The problem is that something erases it immediately (if I click for the first time); and it does not erase this text 2-nd time. Maybe the problem is not erasing, but scrolling because of long line in status bar (spaces, etc...)?

I also see now something additional that I did not see before. I'm speaking about state of the status bar (convex/concave). Normally it is concave. But in case of bug it becomes convex. In the 2-nd image the line/col part of the status bar became convex (and does not show info). In the 3-rd image we see line/col info on concave part, but all the other parts of the status bar do not contain text, and in turn became convex - I did not pay attention to this before.

The latest EDP preview version behaves different - the problem is in the line/col part only. Other parts stay concave, and always show their info.

Thank you.

I'm almost out of ideas. Please try another build at http://www.prestosoft.com/download/ed34preview.zip . If it doesn't help, is it possible that you use some unusual visual theme in your Windows XP? BTW, is it a US edition?

And what does it mean if it helps? (It indeed helped.)

I use Windows XP Pro +SP2, usual visual theme.

How to know if it is US edition?

Regional settings:
- English (US) standards and formats.
- Israel location.
- Files for complex script and right-to-left languages installed.
- Files for East Asian languages installed.
- Language for non-Unicode programs: Russian.
The other user, which I mentioned in one of my previous messages, and which has the same problem, has less eclectic settings.

Thank you.

Then you said "It indeed helped", did you mean that the latest build fixed the problem?

Yes, I meant that with "ExamDiff.exe" (MD5: 50941A3688254742F5588C708E185461) from "ed34preview.zip" (MD5: 27C8747923C697AD621E1408F6E7D244) I can't reproduce the problem anymore.

Thank you.
