Performance issue when diffing a file over network

Post by sthomas »

Prior to version 3.5.1.5, version 3.2 I believe when I would diff 1 or more files via a UNC path I saw no performance issue.

Our file system is located offsite so I understand some lag when loading files or doing directory diffs, but when doing a replace from 1 file to another as long as 1 of the files is off the network it takes 2-3 seconds and I begin seeing network traffic after I click replace.

To clarify my issue is not the time to diff 2 files or to diff 2 directories, but the time it takes to actually do a replace on a block of text is 2-3 seconds for one network files and 5-6 seconds for 2 network files.

A diff/replace between two local files is slower than previous versions, but the previous versions replace over the network drives saw no performance hit.

Is EDP using the network drive for it's tmp space for something?

I have done many things listed in this forum and in the FAQ to help with performance, but to no prevail. These are resonably small files and fast laptops with no shortage on resources.

Any help would be appreciated!!

No, temp files are not created on the network drives. However, I was able to reproduce the issue, although in my case replacing takes just slightly longer than on local drives (not 2-3-5-6 seconds but rather 1 second vs. instantaneous for local files). Let me investigate the issue and report back the results.

The latest build of 4.0 Beta includes multiple optimizations for network paths. Please give it a try.
