Loading time is very long on Win7

Post by macscaff »

Hello,

I am currently evaluating ExamDiff Pro and therefore tried it on Window 7. Unfortunately I found 2 issues that currently prevent our company from buying some licenses:
1. Loading time of the application is very long (>10 sec.).
The machine tested on: AMD X2 6000+, 6GB RAM, Window 7 Ultimate Pro 64bit.
Running ExamDiff on the same machine under WinXP shows no issues.
2. Explorer integration - The icons in the context menu are not aligned correctly.

Is there a way to fix these issues?
Will they be fixed in the next version and if so when can this version be expected?

Kind Regards
Mac

One user reported a similar issue that this was due to Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. If not, it could be some other antivirus software. Otherwise, you could attach a debugger and create an EDPro dump while it is loading (I believe Window 7's task manager can do this). This can reveal why it takes so long to load the program.
2. Explorer integration - The icons in the context menu are not aligned correctly.
There actually a fix for this: http://www.prestosoft.com/download/EDPShellFix.zip You'll need to copy these files to your ExamDiff Pro directory. You may need to kill your Explorer if the DLLs are already loaded in its process memory.

Even when run without any Antivirus Software active the problems persist.

Maybe as a hind for you and helping you finding the reasons for the loading time issue:
Another application we are currently evaluating, Ultra Compare, had the exact same problems on Windows 7. This software has an option to switch from saving settings in the registry to saving them in an Ini file instead. After we did that the loading times where like you would expect them to be.

We don't provide the INI file option. However, during loading there's no writing to the Registry. Perhaps instead of both of us guessing you could create a dump and send it to me - that would definitely answer the loading time question.

The same thing is happening to me.
I'm using Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 64-bit.
Opening and Closing ExamDiff Pro takes a long time. Too long to be used.
Can you give better instructions for how you'd like the dump?
The program doesn't show up in the Task Manager for a very long time. I'm not sure the dump will be useful.
I'm attaching ExamDiff.DMP.

The attachment didn't come through. However, you are probably right: if the examdiff.exe process didn't appear in the Task Manager for a long time, the dump would be too late. We'll take a closer look at loading time under Windows 7.

We tested this on two different Windows 7 Ultimate PCs, and the startup is very fast on both. One uses Avast antivirus, and the other - Microsoft Forefront Security. So I guess there's something else that causes long startup time but at this point we don't know what.

I'm using Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations here at work but I've installed ExamDiff Pro into a directory that is supposedly ignored by Kaspersky. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Kaspersky is the problem.

I noticed that a coworker was using ExamDiff (not ExamDiff Pro) and it seemed much quicker to load so I tried it and, sure enough, it's faster for me too.
And I installed it normally too. That is, I installed it into the default location which Kaspersky scans.

What's different about the startup of ExamDiff vs ExamDiff Pro that might affect startup speed?

ExamDiff and ExamDiff Pro are very different, so it's hard to compare one to the other. I wonder if you could disable Kaspersky and try launching ExamDiff Pro after that.

I'm running ExamDiff Pro on a Windows 7 64-bit machine and it loads in less than a second. I think the problem may be due to the antivirus program.
I'm running AVG and don't experience any problems.

I'm just a long time satisfied user....
4.5 features are great!
