ExamDiff Pro Hangs Windows 7

Post by Chris Moreton »

Hi,

I am using ExamDiff Pro (5.0.1.2) 32 Bit on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit.

I have an intermittent problem after I edit one or both files being compared in ExamDiff. The save completes correctly then one or two dialog boxes 'fly-by' and then the PC/OS hangs and the only way out is to power-off (hold power button down for 3-4 seconds). The mouse & keyboard are totally unresponsive. The only indication of what is happening is that ExamDiff shows 'Setting fonts & colors...' in its status bar in the lower left corner of its window.

This problem also occurred intermittently in the previous version of ExamDiff Pro but I am, unfortunately, able to remember the specifics of that version.

This sounds very odd. We've never heard of EDPro hanging Windows. Even if it hangs itself (due to an undiscovered bug), it's hard to explain how a user-mode application can hang the operating system.

Please contact us via the contact for (http://www.prestosoft.com/ps_email.asp), and we'll send you a link to download a special traced version that may hopefully shed some light on this problem.

Hi,

I have used the traced version of ExamDiff Pro that you supplied for some time time without a problem.

However: I have now got 2 files that, when compared, reliably hang my PC with the same symptom, "Setting Fonts & colors...". This occurs with both the traces version as well as the latest version 5.0.1.18.

If I was to send these two files to you for you to test/debug would their contents be safe and then deleted once you have finished debugging?

Regards,

Chris Moreton.

Yes, we'll follow these instructions. Please also send me the trace itself.

Hi,

I know this is an older thread but I am having the exact same issue and did not see a resolution.

I am running the 32-bit version 5.0.1.9 of Exam Diff Pro. When I try to compare two 4109 KB files, it stops at "Setting fonts & colors" and locks up my entire laptop. The only thing I can do is a hard shutdown. I have been running Exam Diff Pro for 3 years or so with no problems.

Thank you.

Do you have the same problem with the latest version (5.5)?

Sorry, I got sidetracked with some other things.

No, 5.5 works fine. I was able to download the 5.5 evaluation version to another laptop and compare the same two files successfully.

Not sure what update you are referring to. Since 5.5 (our latest version) does not seem to have this issue, it looks like you need to upgrade to it.
