ExamDiff with elevated rights possible again via right mouse key?

Post by Alpengreis »

Hello

In earlier versions (maybe v13 or something like that), if you were a normal user with restricted rights in a file manager (for example Total Commander) with administrator rights and made a comparison using the right mouse button, ExamDiff would also run with elevated rights. Then this was changed and ExamDiff has been running with restricted rights ever since. Could this behavior be changed again?

Example:

1) I work as a restricted user and start an my Total Commander file manager which supports the ExamDiff right mouse key function, with elevated rights.

2) I make a comparison with ExamDiff using the right mouse button.

Result NOW: ExamDiff is running with restricted rights (as a restricted user).

Result BEFORE: ExamDiff was also running with elevated rights.

Note: ExamDiff is really the only program I have that behaves like this. I also uninstalled ExamDiff cleanly (everything including the registry) and reinstalled it - with no change.

Of course I can start ExamDiff itself (without right-clicking via the Total Commander file manager) as administrator - but that's not the point.

What operating system are you using? Is this reproducible in Windows Explorer?

Microsoft Windows 10 Pro x64 [19045.5440] [22H2] [de-CH]

Windows explorer can't be started with administrator rights normally. But I CAN start it (via trick) with admin rights and yes, it's reproducable there too.

Can this be tested from an admin user Windows somehow? This is how we run our dev environments.

No, I dont think so. Best way is to add a restricted user on a test system ... then it should be easy to reproduce.

Why would one need this? - is it to read files that your user wouldn't otherwise be able to?

Presumably starting the compare via the right-click context menu only works (ever) if in Explorer/whatever you've had the rights to read the directory info of the parent directory?

Because I have often to compare different files between an administrator (elevated) and user (restricted). And because I always work as restricted user it's not possible without I have an elevated session. So - instead to open ExamDiff as Admin and manually select those different files always, it's easier to start an elevated file manager and compare it with right mouse click. So with an elevated file manager I have of course the right for the admin files AND user files.

I never saw another program which opens a restricted session from an elevated session via context menu (right mouse button), except ExamDiff. So the behaviour of ExamDiff is not standard I would say.

And last but not least: former versions (13 or so) were "good" yet (standard behaviour).

JFI: that works perfectly now!

Thank you very much - your support is always great ... and this over years (since I use this super program)!

I appreciate that much.

Greetings
